Photo shooting tips for beginners
The right clothes for the photo shoot
Which clothes you wear is crucial for a successful photo shoot. Too flashy and it distracts from your face, too plain and you look like your own grandma: Boring!
So choose outfits that make you look great, but don’t draw all the attention.
During a photo shooting in the WOW! Gallery you can also choose several outfits and change between the sets.
Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to orientate yourself during the photo shooting:
Dos and Don’ts when it comes to photo shooting outfits
|Dark clothes||Flashy colors|
|Glasses with anti-reflective lenses||Normal glasses|
Explanation – the Do’s:
Dark clothing: Dark colors make your face shine and make you look slimmer in the photo.
Accessories: Here too, less is more. Go for minimalist accessories that do not distract the viewer’s gaze from your face.
Glasses with anti-reflective lenses: A pair of glasses is only a successful accessory if the lenses are either anti-reflective or not at all, otherwise they reflect. Glasses in themselves are a great way to add contour to your face.
Contrasts: In general, you should make sure that the contrast is as high as possible. If you are shooting in front of a light background, dark clothes are needed, and dark clothes should be worn in front of a light background. If you want to wear white, you should always combine it with something darker, like a jacket.
This guest simply does everything right: The outfit is chosen to match the futuristic background:
Light colors: If you wear light colors, your face fades into the background. Many of our backgrounds are bright and would make you disappear visually.
Patterns: While a small logo on your shirt is no problem, you should avoid flashy patterns. Again, the attention will be drawn away from your face.
Shorts: Usually your face and décolleté are the only skin a viewer will see. To keep it that way, you should avoid wearing shorts.

Indoor Photoshooting Tipps
For most photographers it is a real challenge to take pictures indoors. Why is that so?
The answer is quite simple:
They lack natural light!
So that you can succeed in your indoor photo shooting immediately, here are a few useful indoor photo shooting tips:
Use light to your advantage
Where does the light come?
This is the first question you should ask yourself as soon as you enter a room.
Always point your face towards the light so that the shadow falls exactly as you think it should. After all, you don’t want your outfit to be covered by an ugly shadow, do you?
Since the WOW! Gallery works with lighting experts, you don’t have to worry about that.
You will look perfect from every angle!
Practice in front of the mirror
Mirror, mirror on the wall… what am I supposed to do with my hands?!
Before trying out a new pose, you should have rehearsed it a few times at home in front of the mirror.
There is nothing worse than a tense posture because you don’t know what you are doing!
If you have practiced your poses in the mirror beforehand, you will be able to focus much more on the angle from which you are being photographed and how you want to look like in the finished picture.
Your outfit pinches, the light is blinding and you just don’t know what to do with your hands?
On photos, one can immediately tell if someone doesn’t feel comfortable.
Your posture seems tense, your smile artificial, your jaws tense. A simple photo shooting tip to avoid photos like that:
Put your hands loosely on your hips and push one leg a little forward.
One hand should always be higher than the other. Alternatively, you can simply play with your hair, like our guest @lisakueppers:
Make sure there is enough space
Have the courage to leave a gap!
No, not a gap between your teeth, but a gap between arms, legs and body.
This is one of the most common mistakes made during a photo shoot: models press their limbs too close to the body.
This makes the arms look thicker than they actually are.
To test if you leave enough space, just put a hand between your arms or legs and your body. If it fits loosely in between, the distance is correct.
Flashes are taboo!
Not only is additional light completely unnecessary in our Instagram Museum, it also looks artificial.
There are more elegant photo shooting tips for adjusting the brightness and sharpness of your images:
Change the ISO value of your camera: Check the ISO value in your camera settings. This should be between 800 and 1600. The higher the ISO value, the brighter your pictures will be.
Use a large aperture: The larger the aperture of your camera, the more light falls on its sensor. This makes for nice sharp, but above all bright photos!
Use a tripod: This tip has less to do with the brightness than with the sharpness of your pictures. If you don’t want to buy a tripod, use a solid surface like a table to support your arms or activate the image stabilization of your camera.
FAQ about our photo shooting tips
What kind of make-up should I use?
Every skin blemish is noticeable during a photo shoot. Therefore, place special emphasis on an even complexion. You should also coordinate your make-up with your outfit. The more eye-catching your outfit, the more gaudy your make-up can be. But be careful: Think about where you want to direct the attention of the observer.
Photo shooting with or without styling?
If you are still a little unsure about your styling, having an expert by your side is not a bad idea. He or she can help you put the finishing touches to your look. In our WOW! Gallery you can easily book a make-up artist for yourself. Send us a message!
How many pictures should I take?
The motto “less is more” does NOT apply to the photo shoot. Shoot several hundred photos and vary your poses minimally. Fast movements will cause blurred photos.
How much does a photo shoot cost?
You can find the prices for the photo shooting, when booking a ticket to the WOW! Gallery.
Photo shooting: Alone or with a friend?
Even if it may seem a bit embarrassing at first to pose in front of other people. Having someone at your side brings many advantages! You have someone who takes pictures of you and who makes you laugh. Have fun and enjoy the time!
Photoshooting tips for photographers
Are you looking for some tips for the right photo shooting preparation as a photographer? Then this is the right place for you!
Visualize the desired photos in advance
Think about which photos you would like to have.
Let yourself be inspired and look at the pictures of other photographers. Once you know the location, a look at their website will help you to see which sets are available to you.
A visit before the shooting is even better. This way you can get an impression of the lighting situation and are able to make a plan:
Which poses should your model take?
From which angle does the background look best?
Consider the wishes of your model in the planning and discuss the outfits for the shooting.
Beware: A gaudy outfit in front of a colorful background often seems too much.
Get your equipment ready
A good equipment is the be-all and end-all of a professional photographer.
Put together a checklist for your equipment so that you don’t forget anything. Some must-haves for a good photographer are:
- A good camera
- Lenses in different sizes
- Replacement Batteries
- empty (!) memory cards
Especially the last point is something you should never forget. There is nothing more embarrassing than finding out in the middle of a shooting that your memory is full and you don’t have any memory cards with you.
Control the lighting
You’re nothing without your light.
This is especially true for indoor photo shootings.
So make sure you get an impression of the light situation and use reflectors and flashes to illuminate your model well.
In the WOW! Gallery you have the possibility to play with the ambient light and influence the numerous lamps. After all, the color of the lighting influences the mood of your photos.
Know your camera
During the photo shoot your attention should be 100% on your model.
No time to “take a quick look at the settings”.
You should know exactly which settings you want to use on which set. Make notes so that you don’t lose precious time (or look like a complete beginner).
Make your model comfortable
The professional relationship with your model determines how successful your photo shoot will be.
If you want your model to let herself go in front of the camera, you should create a relaxed atmosphere. Talk to your model, give him or her instructions and throw in a few jokes here and there.
A real no-go? Not to communicate with your model. This throws an unprofessional light on you. Make clear announcements – but always be friendly and allow your model’s to bring in ideas and suggestions.
After the photo shoot is before the photo shoot
You have taken great photos, just said goodbye to your model and think your job is done?
If you want to work with your model again in the future, you should thank her for the great cooperation.
Write him or her a thank-you e-mail and attach all copies of the prettiest photos.
If you don’t get an answer after a few days, check again what the model thinks of your work.
Even if your first session didn’t go so well, tell her what went wrong from your side and apologize. Also ask your model what you can do better next time.
Feedback is the key to your success!
Over time, you can also develop a questionnaire that you can hand out to your model after the session. However, experience shows that you rarely receive such a paper back.
It is better to seek a personal conversation.
